Smoking ban in all public housing takes effect nationwide

NYCHA tenants already dealing with lead paint and toxic mold now hit with smoking ban

The policy prohibits tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars or pipes - in all living units, indoor common areas, administrative offices and all outdoor areas within 25 feet of housing and administrative office buildings, according to a release from HUD.

Smokers can no longer light up in or near public housing facilities in the USA due to a new rule that went into effect July 31.

The smoking ban is drawing a mixed reaction.

The city initially rolled out a policy in July 2015 that prohibited residents from smoking inside the units.

What do you think about the new ban, will residents comply or risk getting evicted?

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development officially banned smoking on February 3, 2017 and provided an 18-month implementation period for all public housing authorities.

"We have no choice here in terms of the legislative process", Alpi said.

"I'm doing my best to quit, but I don't want to lose my house", a tenant said.

"Residents have been required to sign new leases acknowledging the new policy and staff will continue to provide smoking cessation program information to residents as requested", Lemons said.

They say this will help with health issues regarding second-hand smoking. Housing authorities, including Memphis, have said they have met with tenants and will work with people to kick the habit.

A woman who lives in Macon's Anthony Homes, says she doesn't smoke, but finds the ban unfair.
