Elon Musk in trouble over controversial tweets | CMO Strategy

Elon Musk

The latest Twitter fit came after British diver Vern Unsworth, a volunteer who played a key role in organizing the rescue of 12 boys from a flooded Thai cave last week, called Musk's offer to save the boys using a "kid-size submarine" a "PR stunt", during an interview with CNN on Friday.

Tesla investors have issued an open letter to Elon Musk, demanding that he apologize for his "pedo" comment about Vernon Unsworth - the British cave diver who criticized his rescue efforts in Thailand.

Mr Musk responded on Sunday in a series of tweets referring to Mr Unsworth as "pedo guy". Musk has since deleted the tweets.

He can "stick his submarine where it hurts," Unsworth said during the interview in Thailand. "Yes, it's not finished", Unsworth told Australian outlet Channel 7, per BBC News. "I don't know the guy, never met the guy, and don't want to meet the guy", he said.

Four days after Tesla's fourth-largest shareholder urged "a time of quiet and peace", chief executive Elon Musk lobbed one of his nastiest stink bombs yet: an accusation about an organizer of the Thailand cave rescue that investors say is a major distraction from his mission running the embattled automaker.

Musk followed up his tweet with another saying "Bet ya a signed dollar it's true".

Mr O'Donnell said Mr Musk has fallen into a "hero worship persona" but has failed to live up to the responsibility that implies. Tesla shares fell from $318.87 on Friday's close to $307.20 in after-hours trading on Monday, Reuters reports, stripping nearly $2 billion from the company's market value.

Musk has a history of piquing influencers in Tesla's community, including auto analysts and journalists.

Unsworth told AFP on Monday he had not reviewed the tweets in full and had only heard about them. Shares of the electric-car maker fell as much as 3.6 per cent after the CEO called a British cave explorer who had criticized him a pedophile.

Elon Musk, the tech company billionaire and founder of the tech companies Tesla and SpaceX, often impresses us with his visionary innovations in energy and travel. Musk has continued to defend the vessel, which he said "could also work as an escape pod in space".

Tesla stock plunged 3% on Monday on news that Musk called the diver a "pedophile guy" and of his controversial political contributions to Republican campaign groups.

"Over the last 6 months, there have been too many examples of concerning behavior that is shaking investor confidence", the letter added.

The company, which has had only two profitable quarters, is deep in debt and will have trouble meeting Musk's prediction of a profit in the second half of this year, Spiegel said.
