Serena Williams Defeated At Wimbledon: Upset Again By Angelique Kerber In Final

Duchesses make first joint appearance as Meghan cheers friend Serena at Wimbledon

Germany's Angelique Kerber reacts during the women's singles final against Serena Williams of the United States at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, Britain, July 14, 2018.

However, Kerber's vintage defensive skills enabled the German to neutralise her opponent's enormous power and earned the 11th seed - guilty of just five unforced errors in the match - a 6-3 6-3 victory on Centre Court for her first Wimbledon crown.

Angelique Kerber has taken the first set 6-3 against Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final. It's obviously disappointing but I can't be disappointed, I have so much to look forward to, you know, I'm literally just getting started.

"I had a really tough delivery and multiple surgeries and nearly didn't make it, to be honest". Two of those matches came in Grand Slam finals.

As things stand, Williams holds the mark for the half-century of professional tennis, one ahead of Kerber's idol, Graf. "Think about that, 14th match in a year and a half; you can't replicate match play in practice". "She's an incredible person, Angelique is, and she's a really good friend, so I'm really happy for her", she said.

Kerber looked impeccable during her 6-3, 6-3 win over Ostapenko where she dragged her young opponent all across the court.

"Honestly, I just feel like it was a necessary evil". Williams was vying for an eighth career Wimbledon title, after missing the Grand Slam tennis tournament past year while pregnant. After another two months away, she played in the French Open in May, withdrawing in the fourth round with an injured pectoral muscle.

She stunned Williams in the 2016 Australian Open final to claim her maiden Grand Slam title.

The women last played each other in 2016, when Williams beat Kerber.

Also supporting Williams on Centre Court are golfer Tiger Woods, Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, and Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour.

She added: "To all the moms out there, I was playing for you today and I tried".

"I entered Wimbledon just wanting to win some matches". Williams was mostly her own undoing, too: She was responsible for the final's initial six unforced errors. The Duchess of Cambridge is Patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and a keen tennis fan, so it's no surprise she will be taking a break from her maternity leave to make an appearance at the ladies' finals.

At the final point she ran up to the Royal Box and hugged her coach Wim Fissette, who she turned to after a poor 2017 season dropped her down the rankings. She's 9-2 since her return from over a year off because of the pregnancy, and even though she lost to Angelique Kerber in the finals, she put up a truly inspiring performance. In fact, I've probably forget about it.
