Trump scolds North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members days ahead of summit

NATO Braces For Trump, White House Says Business As Usual

A+ for Trump on this one.

What is different now, however, is the obvious personal antipathy of the United States president toward the alliance in general and some of the key leaders in particular.

Trump accused Merkel of pursuing oil and gas deals with Russian Federation that provide Moscow with "billions and billions of dollars" while looking to the United States to protect Germany from Russia's military.

"What people are anxious about this trip is he'll have equally hard interactions with his North Atlantic Treaty Organisation counterparts", including Merkel and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, said James Goldgeier, a visiting senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and professor at American University, who is an expert in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and security alliances.

President Vladimir Putin did not attend the game, but watched it remotely, saying the players were heroes despite the defeat and the country was proud of them, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was cited as saying by Interfax. On Putin's wish list: an end to USA military exercises in Europe and the scaling back of US forces there.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov recently said that Vladimir Putin is prepared to repeat that Russian Federation had no role in any "interference".

Allies are braced for a barrage of invective from Trump for not spending enough on defense, and are apprehensive that his often skeptical tone on the alliance that has underpinned European security for 70 years might turn into outright hostility.

Yet a sense of suspense hangs over the Trump-Putin summit. "He said that we should keep our eyes open and take the next steps".

Representatives of 17 civil society organizations were marching with the slogan "Make peace great again", mimicking Trump's campaign slogan in the 2016 US presidential election of "Making America great again".

There are concerns among some world leaders about what Trump could do and say during the meeting, and Trump himself recently criticized allies while offering compliments to Russian Federation and Putin--even suggesting that they be brought back into the group of nations now known as the G-7.

The two ambassadors laid out a preliminary schedule for Trump's travels. Trump has dismissed those probes as nothing but a "witch hunt". They include the case of the former Russian spy who, along with his daughter, was poisoned in Britain with nerve gas - a poisoning British authorities say Russia orchestrated.
