The 'Holiday Fire' has damaged or destroyed about 20 structures so far.

A wildfire racing through an area in northern California has killed one person and left at least 40 buildings destroyed, authorities said Friday.

Firefighters have gotten a handle on a wildfire that whipped up late Friday night in the hills above Goleta in Santa Barbara County, and CalFire reports the Holiday Fire is holding at 100 acres. By 7:21 a.m. Friday, the Klamathon Fire had grown to 8,000 acres and was just 5 percent contained. No cause has been determined, but the Santa Barbara County Fire Department said there is now an active investigation.

The family stayed the night with friends in town, but Durtschi couldn't sleep.

California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency, citing "extreme peril" to people and property.

Almost 2,500 people in the Cathedral Oaks neighborhood have been evacuated.

About 75 miles east of Los Angeles, a wildfire in the San Bernardino National Forest prompted mandatory evacuations for the entire community of Forest Falls, which has about 700 homes and about 1,000 residents. He said he hadn't yet told his two oldest children their home was gone.

Multiple structures are threatened, damaged or destroyed, Brady said.

Meanwhile, in Northern California, at least one person has died in the Klamathon Fire, which began near the OR border.

The Jackson County Search and Rescue officials are urging hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to avoid forested areas near the Oregon-California border due to the fire.

The southbound lanes of I-5 that had been closed overnight were reopened at 6:30 a.m., but the local off-ramps remained closed in the area of the fire.

So far, the fire is 0% percent contained.

In southern California, firefighters were taking advantage of calm conditions to attack a small but destructive wildfire in the Santa Barbara County community of Goleta.

The Klamathon Fire has burned 9,600 acres in California and parts of southern OR, and is one of about 10 fires raging in the state, fueled by rising temperatures and gusty winds.

"Our firefighters have just gotten out of training and now we're sending them out", said Burns. The fire quickly grew to about 1.5 square miles.

The blaze started Thursday and is spreading fast, and about 750 people have been evacuated, fire officials said.

With warm temperatures, windy conditions and potential for lightning, there's a chance of more fires in the coming days.

Meanwhile, a brush fire that broke out Thursday afternoon near the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area in Irwindale, California, has scorched 15-20 acres.
