McConnell Tries to Nudge Trump Toward Two Supreme Court Options

Donald Trump

Judge Amul Thapar, of the US Court of Appeal for the Sixth Circuit, was originally among those President Trump would be considering for Kennedy's position.

NBC, which only has American Ninja Warrior's Minneapolis qualifiers booked for this Monday, has yet to announce any tweaks to its line-up, while Fox as has been the case this summer has a disposable 9-1-1 rerun airing at 9 pm. He's reportedly down to four possible picks, all of whom are Federalist Society members: Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, Raymond Kethledge and Thomas Hardiman.

Her socially conservative views and affiliation with People of Praise, a tight-knit religious lay group, are already attracting suspicion. Just days after his inauguration in January 2017 he nominated the conservative justice Neil Gorsuch to the court. The US President interviewed seven candidates from his master list of 25 judges, the White House said.

Hardiman has built a reputation as a reliable conservative on the federal appeals court in Philadelphia, where he has served alongside one of Trump's sisters, Judge Maryanne Trump Barry, who is said to have recommended Hardiman for the Supreme Court vacancy a year ago.

The New York Times on Sunday reported that the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, was strongly urging Trump to opt for either Hardiman or Kethledge on grounds that the other two might be impossible to get confirmed. "I'm very, very happy with them and we will pick somebody who will be outstanding, hopefully for many years to come", he said.

This will be 6.30 am - Tuesday - local India time on July 10.

Trump during his campaign in 2016 said he would appoint justices who would overturn the landmark 1973 decision that said women have a constitutional right to an abortion.

"I think of the four people, I have it down to three or two. The whole list is extraordinary", he said.

"I'll have a decision made in my mind by Sunday". We'll announce it on Monday.

"If you look at what the president said, which is he will nominate someone only if that person is committed to automatically overturn Roe v. Wade, if you look at what the president said about John Roberts, his berating Roberts for failing to strike down the Affordable Care Act, he certainly has criteria", he said.

Trump had discussed the nomination with Vice President Mike Pence in Bedminster, New Jersey yesterday.

Blumenthal acknowledged that the Democrats have few options to stop the confirmation in the Senate, which Republicans control by a 51-49 margin, but said they would plead their case to the American public.
