Supreme Court nomination has become a campaign issue

Collins made headlines this weekend when she told CNN she wouldn't support a nominee who "demonstrated hostility" toward Roe v. Wade.

Kennedy often sided with more liberal justices on issues like abortion and gay rights.

"To allow states to be able to go back to criminalizing women's freedom to make their own healthcare decisions, I think would be devastating", Kaine said.

It's true elections have consequences, but the disjunction between the Senate majority that produces a very conservative court, on one hand, and, on the other, the public, derives in large part from lesser-populated red states providing a cushion for Republicans in the Senate (and hence the court) and the electoral college.

And it said a team of lawyers from the White House and Department of Justice are gathering information to assist Trump with the process.

"The dogma lives loudly within you and that's a concern", Feinstein said, "when you come to big issues that large numbers of people have fought for for years in this country".

Trump is now interviewing potential nominees to replace pro-gay and sometimes pro-abortion Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced his retirement last week.

Trump said he interviewed four potential nominees to the Court on Monday, according to the Post. With a good pick to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, Trump can achieve what Reagan could not.

Collins voted to confirm Neil Gorsuch to court a year ago. They were angry that, after declining to convene a vote on President Barack Obama's nominee for the court, the Republican Senate majority leader now is set to confirm the second justice nominated by President Trump.

Collins and even several Democrats agreed to back Gorsuch because they said he clearly valued legal precedent and the independence of US courts.

The other top potential nominees are Thomas Hardiman, who serves on the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals; Raymond Kethledge of the Cincinnati, Ohio-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals; and Amul Thapar, whom Trump named to the 6th Circuit.

But two advisers familiar with the White House's strategy told the Herald that the focus would be more on moderate Senate Democrats up for re-election: Sens.

But "this is merely the first step in our full-fledged advocacy campaign for the nomination and confirmation of a constitutional conservative to the U.S. Supreme Court", said One Nation President Steven Law.
