Chandrashekhar Sawant, a 47-year-old driver from Mira Road in Mumbai saved hundreds of lives by acting quickly in the time of the emergency. Scores of passengers have been left stranded in Mumbai rain during morning rush hour after the partial collapse disrupted services of the Western Railway. Traffic at the bridge was stopped and trains, which are Mumbai's lifeline, were hit.

Railways minister Piyush Goyal applauded Sawant's "quick thinking and timely action" and said he will get Rs 5 lakh as reward. Six people have reportedly been injured. Another witness said some people were trapped under the concrete debris.

Mumbai has been lashed by showers since many hours now. Meanwhile, Fadnavis also asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner to increase the frequency of BEST buses for the convenience of commuters.

Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam and NCP Mumbai President Sachin Ahir unanimously demanded a full audit of all 250-plus bridges, skywalks, flyovers, FOBs, and ROBs crossing the suburban railway network and a white paper on the safety status.

Rainfall is expected to cross 90mm in some parts of the city today. The Western Railway stated that trains were being operated between Goregaon-Virar on the northern side and Bandra-Churchgate in the southern direction, besides Harbour Line from Bandra-CST.

While the Western Railway said the bridge belongs to the BMC, the latter said the crash took place on the portion which was the railway's responsibility for repairs and maintenance.

#TravelUpdate Due to heavy rains at Mumbai, traffic congestion on Mumbai airport road is expected due water logging.

Prashant Ghag, who works in media house at Fort said, "When I reached Borivili to board a Churchgate bound train, I came to know that all the lines of Western Railway have come to halt".
