A Republican "compromise" bill reforming U.S. immigration law failed spectacularly in Congress on Wednesday, dealing a blow to President Donald Trump's efforts to resolve a swirling border crisis that has seen thousands of migrant families separated.
Last week, the House voted down a bill that would have cut legal immigration, cracked down on sanctuary cities and employers who hire undocumented workers, and increased border security.
"HOUSE REPUBLICANS SHOULD PASS THE STRONG BUT FAIR IMMIGRATION BILL, KNOWN AS GOODLATTE II, IN THEIR AFTERNOON VOTE TODAY, EVEN THOUGH THE DEMS WON'T LET IT PASS IN THE SENATE", Trump tweeted in his all-caps directive.
US President Donald Trump received a blow on Thursday when the US House of Representatives failed to pass another immigration bill which had narrowed the legalisation for some unauthorised immigrants and eliminated the application for a green card.
The legislation, which had the support of President Donald Trump, also would have provided $25 billion for construction of a wall along the southwest border, curtailed family-sponsored immigration, reformed the asylum process, and provided additional resources for border security.
Colorado Congressman Ken Buck thinks Democrats don't really want to solve America's immigration problems, because if a solution is found, Democrats won't be able to hammer Republicans about migrants in the next election.
"That's why I don't get overly excited with the House bill right now because it's not going to pass in the Senate", he said.
The children separated from their parents in recent weeks are now scattered across the country, some in foster homes and others in institutions.
The Republican-controlled U.S. Congress, riddled by infighting, looked unlikely to act decisively this week on the immigration crisis at the U.S. -Mexico border, providing few answers on what comes next for separated parents and children.
However, the two sides have yet to cobble together a majority to pass the legislation.
Democrats say the bill was too wide and merely created to unite a split Republican party.
But GOP aides said Republicans had yet to agree on bill language. Joe Barton of Ennis, Kevin Brady of The Woodlands, Mike Conaway of Midland, Bill Flores of Bryan, Jeb Hensarling of Dallas, Michael McCaul of Austin and Mac Thornberry of Clarendon voted for the bill. Goodlatte 1 was billed as the more conservative product because it included more interior enforcement, but it only authorized funding for a wall along the southern border, whereas Goodlatte 2 provided advanced appropriations.
The administration also released a formal policy statement saying the White House backed the legislation. That bill was seen as much more conservative than the one lawmakers rejected on Wednesday.
Most of the 36-member Texas delegation voted against the bill, including all the Democrats.
Lawmakers are struggling to find the answers to the immigration question, especially now that a federal judge has ruled the government must reunite immigrant children separated from their families.
"We must call for an end of state-sponsored child abuse, because that's what this policy is", Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) said.
