Porsche 919 Evo Nurburgring Record in Progress: Sets 5:19 Lap Time

Porsche

Two-time Le Mans victor Timo Bernhard was behind the wheel of the specially modified LMP1 racer and shaved almost a full minute off the 6m11.13s time achieved by Bellof at the Nurburgring 1000 km in 1983.

That's the time put down by Timo Bernhard in the 919 Evo at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, utterly obliterating the 35-year-old record held by Stefan Bellof.

Bernhard's time eclipsed that of Stefan Bellof, who managed to set a 6:11.13 lap with a Porsche 956 C, a time which stood as the lap record for 35 years.

And what a race vehicle it turned out to be!

This lap time was Porsche's final goal for its no-holds-barred prototype. Bernhard sets an incredible time of 5min19.55.

The record auto is a heavily reworked version of last year's Le Mans victor, with Porsche upgrading the aerodynamics to produce 53 percent more downforce and lowering the weight by 39kg (85lbs) to 849kg (1871lbs).

The classic 12.94-mile Nordschleife lap was created for 1983 after the demolition of the old pits and start-finish loop in readiness for the construction of the current Nurburgring Grand Prix circuit. A dramatic aerodynamic makeover including the new front diffuser, larger rear wing and drag reduction systems help contribute to a 53 per cent increase in downforce.

This comes after Neel Jani broke the Spa-Francorchamps lap record earlier this year in the heavily modified 1160 horsepower LMP1 auto, with a 1:41.8.

The next stop on the 919's record-chasing farewell tour will be the Goodwood Festival of speed at Brands Hatch in the United Kingdom on July 12-15. For some context, this lap was about 90 seconds faster than the production-car record holder, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.
