Police have confirmed an active shooter in the building housing a Maryland newspaper.
Tom Marquardt, retired publisher and top editor at the paper, told The Capital Gazette on Thursday that he had always been concerned about Ramos' history of escalating social media attacks against the newspaper and its journalists.
"Everyone knew what he looked like", said Marquardt, who now lives in Florida.
He added that the man, in his 20s, used a shotgun during the attack.
More than 170 people were evacuated from the building. The building houses multiple offices. Television reports depicted people leaving the building with their hands up, as police urged them to depart through the parking lot. However, Anne Arundel County police said during a Thursday evening news conference that they could not confirm that information.
The gunman was found under a desk. He and Schuh praised local law enforcement for their quick response. Reports say that out of those who have been targeted, 4 have been rushed to the nearby hospital and are said to be in critical stage.
Erin Cox, a reporter at The Baltimore Sun who previously worked at the Gazette, described the newsroom as a "tight knit family with some top-notch thinkers and writers".
"I'm a police reporter".
Marquardt, who was named as a defendant in Ramos's 2012 defamation lawsuit, told The Baltimore Sun that he called Anne Arundel County police in 2013 about Ramos and considered filing a restraining order.
An intern for the paper first tweeted about the shooting.
"There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you're under your desk and then hear the gunman reload", the reporter, Phil Davis, posted on Twitter amid the bloodshed at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis.
Within a week of his conviction, the paper published an article titled "Jarrod wants to be your friend" in the Sunday edition of the Capital Gazette. "Praying for those at the scene and for our community".
Jimmy DeButts, an editor of the Capital Gazette, wrote in a series of tweets that he was "devastated and heartbroken" by the events. The shooting reportedly happened near the Capital Gazette's newsroom. Officers rushed to the scene, arriving in less than 60 seconds and immediately engaged the shooter, according to officials.
