Uruguay secured first place in World Cup Group A as Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani scored to down 10-man Russian Federation in Samara.

"Statistics are there to be broken", Suarez said.

Edinson Cavani also scored Monday against the host nation, which dropped its first match of the tournament. Russia, meanwhile, have finished second and will play the winners of Group B in the last 16 on Sunday at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. As a team we're thinking about what's best for the squad as that's what's most important.

Russia's best chance fell to Dzyuba, who fired well wide of the far post from the right side of the box.

Russia's impressive start to the World Cup took a downward turn as they had a man sent off and were easily defeated by Uruguay, whose victory means they top Group A.

A resultant corner from one such strike brought the third goal as Cavani was close at hand to nod in after the goalkeeper had done well to keep out a glancing header from Godin.

There was a party atmosphere around the scorching Samara Arena before kick-off, with fans having travelled from all over the country keen to share in the good feeling surrounding their national team.

Suarez is the all-time leading scorer for Uruguay with 53 global goals in 101 appearances, including a goal against Saudi Arabia last Wednesday. Egypt at the 2018 world Cup lost all three matches.

"I said already that Uruguay has top-notch players".

Luis Suarez grabbed his second goal of the tournament to open Uruguay's account with a free-kick after 10 minutes when he struck a low free-kick into the bottom corner that should have been easy pickings for Russian Federation keeper Igor Akinfeev.

To compound Russia's problems, Smolnikov was sent off after scything down Laxalt just eight minutes after his first booking.

However, Uruguay nearly extended its lead in the 80th minute when Cavani and Suarez raced forward with only one defender to deal with. Coach Oscar Tabarez is expected to make changes in midfield and could even alter their tactical system, due to the inclusion of Lucas Torreira. "When they feel comfortable or at home, they score goals".

There is consolation that this was not their full-strength team and that, when they play in the last 16, three key players will be relatively fresh. "We know as we improve our game we will offer opportunities to all of our players to improve their game".

The 6-1 win over Panama - England's largest-ever margin of victory at the World Cup - was watched by 14.1 million, which was nearly 83 percent of the TV audience in Britain. "We were rather aggressive".

Uruguay, who kept their sixth straight clean sheet, will face the runners-up from Group B, which will be decided when Spain, Portugal and Iran battle it out for two last-16 spots later on Monday.

Russian Federation have scored more goals in this World Cup than the previous two combined and started the second half brightly, the introduction of Fedor Smolov helping insert belief into the rapturous home support.

Scores from Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani sandwiched Denis Cheryshev's own goal in a match of previously unbeaten sides already qualified for the knockout stages.
