Pompeo Says No Sanctions Relief For Pyongyang Until Denuclearization

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un shake hands ahead of their meeting at Capella Hotel in Singapore on June 12

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, right, speaks as South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha, center, and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono listen during a joint news conference in Seoul, June 14, 2018.

On Tuesday, the president and North Korea signed an agreement that aims to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

Trump was also optimistic about the progress they achieved, stating, "We are going to take care of a very big and very risky problem for the world".

Mr Trump tweeted: "Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office".

Moon highly valued the DPRK-U.S. summit as the two countries, which had maintained hostile relations for several decades, held the first-ever summit and promised to establish new bilateral relations for a lasting and stable peace regime of the Korean Peninsula and the complete denuclearization.

USA presidents typically do not salute military officials with adversarial nations.

"Featuring President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un, in a meeting to remake history, to shine in the sun".

"The world should rest assured the United States, Republic of Korea and Japan remain committed to achieve complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea", he said.

Richard Nephew, a nonresident senior fellow on foreign policy at the Brookings Institution, said he believed the most important element of the Trump-Kim statement was the delegation to Pompeo and "a relevant high-level DPRK official" to continue the negotiations, ensuring that there will be a reversion to more technical and detailed talks.

Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said Japan saw "US-South Korean joint exercises and the US military presence in South Korea as vital to security in East Asia".

In a further tweet on Wednesday, President Trump hit out at criticism of his summit in some United States media, dubbing it "Fake News".

Such a withdrawal would be problematic for Japan, to which the USA has long provided security assurances, while it would be welcomed by China, which wants to expand its influence in the region.

"Despite its many flaws", Cha wrote, "the Singapore summit represents the start of a diplomatic process that takes us away from the brink of war".

Moon and Xi have advocated a phased approach to negotiations and moved to quickly fix ties with North Korea, while Japan wants a US-led "maximum pressure" campaign to continue.

North Korean viewers had to wait nearly 20 minutes into the program for Trump's first appearance.

On Fox News' "America's Newsroom" Wednesday, Senator Marco Rubio, R-Fl., commented on the role of Congress after President Trump's North Korea summit.

The talks, aimed at discussing ways of easing cross-border tensions, were to be held at the "truce village" of Panmunjom, on the border between the two countries.
