Designer Kate Spade reportedly found dead from apparent suicide

Fashion designer Kate Spade was found dead in her New York City apartment Tuesday morning, law enforcement officials confirmed to the Associated Press.

But unlike her fellow designer, Scott did not leave a suicide note.

Kate's body was discovered by a housekeeper at her Upper East Side apartment, a source previously told Fox News. She launched Kate Spade with her husband in 1993, and it has since grown into a global fashion and lifestyle brand.

They began by selling handbags before expanding to include clothing, jewelry, bedding, legwear and fragrances.

Spade left the company in 2007, a year after selling it to the Neiman Marcus Group for $125 million.

She changed her name to Katherine Noel Frances Valentine Brosnahan Spade. "I wanted a functional bag that was sophisticated and had some style", Spade told the New York Times in 1999.

"Kate Spade had an enviable gift for understanding exactly what women the world over wanted to carry", Anna Wintour said in a statement.

She was working as an accessories editor at Mademoiselle magazine when she launched her company with husband Andy in their NY apartment in 1993.

The couple had one child, Frances Beatrix Spade.

Kate's brother-in-law, David Spade, wrote about her lighthearted nature.

Actresses Lena Dunham and Beth Behrs were among the first to express their condolences, with Dunham tweeting: "Kate Spade was more than a designer". It is thought that the 55-year-old took her own life. Then, it was sold again in 2017 to Coach's Tapestry Inc. for $2.4 billion.

"We are all devastated by today's tragedy", Spade's family said in a statement to the New York Daily News.

On social media, prominent figures mourned Spade's passing. Chelsea Clinton and other netizens shared stories of how they got their first Kate Spade bag. "National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255".

A kind spirit, a talented creative designer and a philanthropist - that's always how people who admired her will remember Kate Spade. My heart goes out to Kate Spade's family and friends. "You see someone who kind of made a career off of making people smile", she said.

Jenna Bush Hager, daughter of former United States president George W. Bush wrote on Twitter: "I will never forget the first Kate Spade bag I got for Christmas in college". In one post he wrote: "Fuzzy picture but I love it. Kate and I during Christmas family photos".
