Gaga - real name Stefani Germanotta, but you knew that - has pivoted into acting at a measured pace, starting with small roles in Machete Kills and the Sin City sequel before landing a regular role in Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story. Then the drama, romance and singing turn up when Gaga enters the picture, and steals the spotlight from Jackson Maine, played by Cooper. Although Gaga has had country tinged songs in the past, most recently on her last album Joanne, Gaga's Little Monsters always prefer her dancing up a storm in glitter go-go boots. I just don't feel comfortable...
It's the third remake of 1937's "A Star Is Born", for which Janet Gaynor won the Academy Award for her role as an aspiring actress dealing with a fading star, played by Fredric March.
The trailer features Cooper in full country gravel voice as ME - all the music is original and was recorded live (were you at Coachella?), and Gaga also performs original songs she wrote with Cooper and the likes of Lukas Nelson, Jason Isbell and Mark Ronson. "Nearly every single person has told me that they liked the way I sounded, but they didn't like the way I looked". He responds: "I think you're attractive". The movie has been remade a couple of times in the years since, once in once in 1954 with Judy Garland and once in 1976 with Barbara Streisand.
Warner Bros. will open "A Star Is Born" in theaters October 5.
If this whole movie is some variation of Cooper constantly reminding LADY FREAKING GAGA that she is handsome and talented, count me out.
A Star is Born is a movie about debuts, both in the text and outside of it.
