Trump says talks with North Korea going 'very well'

South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un leave after their summit at the truce village of Panmunjom North Korea in this handout

Senior North Korean official Kim Yong Chol and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have had a "good" meeting in NY.

Kim Yong Chol is the most senior North Korean official to meet top officials for talks in the United States since Jo Myong Rok, a vice marshal, met then-President Bill Clinton at the White House in 2000.

Pompeo also said he had a "working dinner" with Kim Yong Chol, adding that their menu included steak, corn, and cheese.

The U.S. secretary of state, who spoke with Trump on Wednesday night and with National Security Adviser John Bolton early Thursday, was accompanied by Andrew Kim, the head of a Central Intelligence Agency unit assigned to work on North Korea, and Mark Lambert, the head of the State Department's Korea desk.

Kim flew from Pyongyang to Beijing Tuesday with North Korean officials including Choe Kang-il, acting director general for North American affairs in its Foreign Ministry, and Kim Song-hye, a senior official from the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Workers' Party.

"We really hope these talks ... do not end up in ultimatums". He was granted special permission to travel to the United States for the meeting, the State Department said. I believe they will be coming down to Washington on Friday.

A week ago, Trump called off the meeting in response to what he said was "tremendous anger and open hostility" displayed by Kim in recent statements that denounced top USA officials. "It seems consistent with how their system is organized, [officials] are on a very tight leash, they have to receive guidance from their superiors", Pinkston added.

"I think it's a pretty big deal and to me this raises whatever the estimates were of the summit actually occurring", she told CNN.

Dr Hecker has toured that nation's secretive labyrinth of nuclear plants four times and remains the only USA scientist to see its facility for enriching uranium, a bomb fuel. It is all a process.

Japan intends to hold a foreign ministerial meeting with North Korea in Singapore in early August if progress is made on Pyongyang's nuclear weapons and missile programs at an expected U.S.

Trump announced that Kim Yong Chol was coming to NY for talks with Pompeo in a tweet on Tuesday in which he said he had a "great team" working on the summit.

"The DPRK's steadfast will to join hands with the world peace-loving people in building a nuclear-free, peaceful world, a new independent world where the dream and ideal of humankind have come true, will remain unchanged in the future", it said.

Despite Lavrov's invitation to Kim, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that it's "too early to speculate" about a Putin-Kim summit.

Last year Trump and Kim were trading war threats and insults after Pyongyang tested its most powerful nuclear weapon to date and missiles which it said were capable of reaching the USA mainland.

Officials from both sides have been scrambling to make the summit happen, with separate teams dispatched to the inter-Korean border and Singapore to discuss the substance of any denuclearization agreement and logistical issues, respectively. "Solid response to my letter, thank you!"

Kim's personal meeting with Lavrov was likely a move to try to secure Russia - along with China - as another powerful player that can push the United States to ease sanctions and make other concessions, said Anthony Rinna, a specialist in Korea-Russia relations at Sino-NK, a website that analyzes the region.

The secretary of state left for NY after meeting with the president at the White House.
