Patrick's 14-year career came to a devastating end, with the U.S. driver retiring from the Indianapolis 500 race this morning. Patrick had been running near the middle of the pack in the Indianapolis 500 when she lost control, slid hard into the outside wall, then caromed across the track and hit the inside barrier. Her vehicle spun wildly, crashed into a pair of walls, and was soon being hauled off the track.
Power dominated the final stages of the race, once those taking a fuel strategy gamble had pitted or backed off to save fuel to make the finish - the strongest of which was Scott Dixon.
"Today was really disappointing for what he were hoping for".
The 2018 Indianapolis 500 was Patrick's final race before retirement and her first Indy 500 since 2011.
She had made seven starts at Indianapolis Motor Speedway before Sunday, including five in the top 10, with six top-10 finishes, including third in 2009. She struggled with an ill-handling vehicle, as evidenced with her spin and crash.
That meant Patrick's final 500 appearance would be perhaps her most frustrating. She got a one-off for the Daytona 500 with Premium Motorsports and was caught in a multi-car crash just past the halfway point.
Patrick said earlier this week she had no regrets about her career, and that she doesn't think she will have the itch to come back.
In more than a century of racing at the famed speedway only three men - AJ Foyt, Al Unser Sr and Rick Mears - have finished the 500 on Victory Lane four times and Sunday's race may have been Castroneves's last shot at joining them. Her eight starts are the most for any woman in the race's history. She also is the first woman to win a pole position in NASCAR's top level when she started first in the 2013 Daytona 500.
"Definitely not a great ending", she said, "but I kind of said before I came here that I feel like if it's a complete disaster - complete, as in not in the ballpark at all, and look silly - then people might remember that".
"I had a great month". Bourdais crashed a year after missing the race because of a harrowing, high-speed accident during qualifying, while Castroneves - who is now driving sports cars for Penske - was going for a record-tying fourth victory in the Indy 500 in a brief return to open-wheel racing.
