Questions After Solo: A Star Wars Story

Twentieth Century Fox

The Memorial Day weekend, which has in recent years struggled to get audiences to leave their BBQs and head to the movies, could have also played a factor.

As it stands, Han Solo looks to debut to a dismal $83 million for its three day weekend and may barely crack $100-101 million for the four day Memorial Day weekend.

The Last Jedi also flopped in China (it was pulled from theaters after a week), and Rian Johnson's movie, even though it grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, showed relatively weak legs at the box office, while proving divisive among Star Wars die-hards. However, the fanbase who did see Solo appears to have enjoyed the experience, giving it an "A-" as per industry WOM tracker CinemaScore (notably the previous Disney Star Wars movies have all earned an "A").

Lucasfilm has at least nine more "Star Wars" films in the works.

"It's the compressed timeframe between the two Star Wars films and the highly competitive nature of this marketplace". Disney will roll out Solo: A Star Wars Story in 4,381 theaters this weekend, the fifth widest release in history, just barely beating out Iron Man 3 by one theater (4,380). The Force Awakens, Rogue One and The Last Jedi each pulled in less than 55% of their money from overseas. Internationally, Deadpool 2 brought in another $57 million across 27 markets, making its global total $279.7 million and putting its worldwide gross at $498.9 million after the Memorial Day holiday. That was just under its $80 million to $85 million projections, and the lowest opening for a "Pirates" movie since the first one, 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" ($46.6 million).

Lucasfilm is supposedly developing a bunch of other movies based on the Star Wars universe as well. We have a "Thor" and a "Black Panther" and an "Infinity War" coming out in November and February and May and each are massively successful.

If "Solo" was a better movie, this would all be moot.

He also makes an appearance in the 2002 prequel Attack Of The Clones as a child clone who helps his father Jango Fett escape - but later sees him decapitated.
