Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis welcomed Unai Emery as his club's manager on Wednesday by claiming the Gunners' job is the "most attractive" in world football.
He said: "Success next season would be developing, but how?" I think that's about battling for every title. That's something in Arsenal's history and in my history as well.
"All of those eight people that we approached, that we targeted, were interested in the position and all of those eight people took part in extensive, in-person interviews with us and none of them at any stage withdrew their interest".
"We were in a fortunate position to name our first choice". A formal recommendation to the board was supported by a 100-page dossier with a great degree of background information. It's a triage style of decision-making led by Gazidis where the manager or coach is expected to fit into a framework and have less overall responsibility. He came in extraordinarily well-prepared with a detailed knowledge of Arsenal football club.
"The thing that distinguished him above all that was the chemistry between us and the feeling for football in the room". He has an energy, a competitive energy, and will to win that made us think this was a ideal fit for Arsenal'.
Gazidis played a key role in Emery's appointment, along with head of football relations Raul Sanllehi and head of recruitment Sven Mislintat. "I'm excited about what we can do together and I look forward to giving everyone who loves Arsenal some special moments and memories". "I know my ambition and my passion and to know how I want to grow up with Arsenal".
Wenger left the club at the end of the season following 22 years in charge with Emery now tasked with improving on a sixth-placed Premier League finish last season. One of the complaints from supporters was the lack of quality in the current squad.
But Laurens, who saw a lot of PSG during Emery's time there, reckons the 46-year-old's style is much more similar to the likes of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp than Wenger, which he believes will be good for Arsenal. The objective is to work hard together.
Arsenal finished fifth and sixth in the Premier League in the final two seasons...
"For all the coaches in the world, he is a reference".
"I also want the team to make the fans proud". He has been handed a three-year deal as Arsene Wenger's replacement.
"All the meetings with the people, with Ivan, Raul and Sven, for me the connection in this moment was important", he added, before expanding on the footballing vision that helped him to three consecutive Europa League wins at Sevilla.
During his two-year spell with the French giants, he also won four domestic cups, having joined from Sevilla in 2016.
