Gina Haspel Earned Praise Leading Up To Committee Vote

Haspel has been accused of setting up a torture site in Thailand and for overseeing the destruction of CIA documents

Haspel's nomination reopened debate about the CIA's now-defunct program of detaining terror suspects overseas at secret lock-ups and subjecting them to harsh interrogation techniques.

"She has acted morally, ethically, and legally, over a distinguished 30-year career and is the right person to lead the Agency into an uncertain and challenging future", he said.

Earlier yesterday, United States President Donald Trump took to his Twitter account to showcase his support for Haspel to be elected to the top post in the intelligence agency.

At the end of Gina Haspel's confirmation hearing last week, Sen.

"She is the worst possible person to head the Central Intelligence Agency ..."

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., tweeted last week she opposes Haspel's appointment, and will vote against it when it comes before the whole Senate.

Sen. Angus King, the independent from ME, also voted against Haspel at the committee, saying he felt she was not forthcoming about her role in the torture program. In announcing his support for the nominee, Warner said Haspel has been "professional and forthright" with the intelligence committee, "Most importantly, I believe she is someone who can and will stand up to the president if ordered to do something illegal or immoral - like a return to torture".

The panel voted 10-5 in favor of Gina Haspel in a closed session Wednesday.

The 61-year-old Kentucky native would be the nation's first female CIA director, capping a 33-year career with the agency that has sent her to some of the world's most risky places as a covert agent. "I'm pleased to see the Committee favorably report her nomination to the full Senate, and I look forward to her swift confirmation", he said. In fact, Haspel's claims (in both the hearing and her follow-up answers) that torture did not appear on those tapes suggest that perhaps someone at the black site she ran had made the tapes unreadable in 2002.

The 100-seat US Senate is narrowly divided, with the Republicans holding 51 seats and the Democrats, 47, with two independent members voting with the minority. "Ms. Haspel's apparently clear path of confirmation", it wrote, "essentially ends a cycle of debate about the agency's use of torture after the September 11 attacks..."

The full Senate is expected to vote on Haspel's confirmation next week. There is a legal and moral responsibility that comes with operating in secrecy.

Flake, however, said in his statement Wednesday that he still has concerns over Haspel's role in the destruction of videotapes of interrogations.

The five Democrats supporting Haspel are: Warner, Manchin, Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire.

"As Director of the CIA, Gina Haspel will be the first operations officer in more than five decades to lead the Agency".

In an interview, Gerald Staberock, secretary general of the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT), said Haspel's expected confirmation is a "terrible message by the USA that torture is not a crime". He said he's convinced that Haspel could and would stand up to Trump, who has voiced support for waterboarding and has said "torture works".
