How New York can benefit from legalized sports betting

The Latest: NJ racetrack to take bets 'as soon as possible'

The Supreme Court has cleared the way for more states to bet on sports gambling as a source of revenue.

Company president and chief executive Mark Frissora says Monday's ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court could end illegal sports wagering by replacing it with a well-regulated alternative that sports fans can trust.

State officials and representatives of the casino industry greeted the ruling with something like glee.

IL casino operators support legalizing sports betting, though they've warned against high taxes and fees, saying it would drive up the cost of doing business and prevent them from competing with illegal bookies.

Major League Baseball said it would "continue to support legislation that creates air-tight coordination and partnerships between the state, the casino operators and the governing bodies in sports" toward protecting the integrity of the game.

Some others in Kentucky saw the court ruling as an opportunity for Kentucky which faces more than $40 billion in unfunded public pension obligations and the consequent squeeze on funding for education and other state government services.

The American Gaming Association, a trade group that represents casinos, predicted that the ruling would generate revenue without endangering the integrity of sports competitions.

"This is positive news", Gov. Doug Ducey said on hearing the court struck down the law, which until now has prohibited most states from authorizing their residents to place legal bets on the outcome of professional and amateur sports.

"We fully support the Supreme Court's decision to allow sports betting in New Jersey".

"So long as single-event sports betting is criminalized in Canada, Canadians who engage in this type of betting online do so in a completely unregulated and potentially unsafe way, with few or no responsible gambling protections or enforced-age restrictions", David Eby said in an emailed statement.

The decision allows IL to move ahead with proposals to legalize and tax sports betting, which supporters say would transform a black market industry into one that could produce much-needed revenue.

Sports leagues had expressed concerns about any expansion of sports gambling.

"Because it's in our constitution right now that sports betting is not allowed", said Attorney General Marty Jackley.

The fever related to sports betting legislation subsided around 11:00pm Eastern Time Monday, as Twitter activity on the topic temporarily subsided.

Five justices agreed with every part of Alito's opinion, and Stephen Breyer with most of it. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, joined by Sonia Sotomayor, dissented, saying the majority had ruled too broadly. She said that instead of using a "scalpel to trim the statute" her colleagues used "an axe".

The NFL plans to ask Congress "to enact a core regulatory framework for legalized sports betting" following the Supreme Court's ruling that would allow sports wagers in most states. Among its sponsors was Sen. Frank Pallone Jr., D-N.J., introduced the Gaming Accountability and Modernization Enhancement Act, or GAME Act. And sports books aren't very profitable.

The law exempted Nevada, where sports betting has always been legal, along with sports lotteries in Delaware, Montana and Oregon. Many places have already concluded their 2018 legislative sessions, which could mean state lawmakers can't address the matter until next year.

Major professional and college sports leagues repeatedly sued to block the state from allowing sports betting, and the ensuing legal battles have cost New Jersey taxpayers millions of dollars.

According to the New York Post, Monmouth (N.J.) Park is looking to begin taking sports bets on May 28. "People enjoy betting on sports". The leagues again sued and won.

In Monday's decision in the case, Murphy v.

Hatch says the 1992 law was created to protect the integrity of athletics from corruption. We're a strong state with jobs, but in due time we're going to need the cash.

"Our union will monitor developments closely and address the implications of this decision with the National Football League, state legislators and other relevant stakeholders". Sports betting legislation fever appeared to eclipse its mercurial threshold Monday as the news spread like wildfire across Twitter.

The principles announced in Monday's decision may have implications for other kinds of federal laws.
