His debut fight in a new weight category was the most hard test for Lomachenko in professional Boxing.
Lomachenko survived a sixth-round knockdown to score a 10th-round technical knockout of Jorge Linares to take the lightweight world championship in the main event of the Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card.
Vasiliy Lomachenko didn't just earn the lightweight world championship with his 10-round TKO of previous champ Jorge Linares on Saturday night.
"For me, it's a big challenge because, before this fight, I fought against guys who were the same size or a little bit smaller than me", said Lomachenko, 30. "No trash talk, nothing to embarrass people with language". "After this fight, we know now that he's a fighter". Linares' promoter Eric Gomez of Golden Boy agreed, saying there were "no losers tonight, just winners".
"Linares is a great champion", Lomachenko told CBS Sports about his opponent, "and the fight was good for the fans and everybody". They all start at his feet.
"I had Lomachenko well ahead", Arum said puzzled by a scoring that favored Linares.
Linares and Lomachenko trade power punches in the first minute of the eighth round.
Linares' straight right hand that dropped Lomachenko in the sixth round made him look human. The round was coming to a close so Linares could not take advantage and jump on Loma. "Fighters like that are the reason I love the sport". Not the case. Lomachenko showed he's got grit in the face of adversity. "I've had him on my radar". Linares had Vasily fierce resistance, but to thwart the plans of a Ukrainian upgrade of the Guinness book of world Boxing still failed.
"I don't know where that 152 came from, but he's probably, like, 141 right now", said Robert Diaz, seemingly indignant at any suggestion that he was that much larger than Lomachenko.
In the tenth round, Lomachenko found the opportunity he was looking for. Lomachenko hit the bigger man with the flawless left hook to the body. Linares reached his feet but was unable to beat the count as referee Ricky Gonzalez waved him off at 2:08.
It could be interesting in the first three rounds as Loma tries figure Linares out, but once he gets a good feel of the distance and the angles, he'll eventually flummox Linares into submission on or before the 9th round. His straight right hand was finding it's home often and he was in control. "The knockout punch was perfectly landed".
At the time of the stoppage, there was no clear victor on the judges' scorecards.
The challenger put together his most thrilling combination of the contest, rocking Linares with a fusillade delivered from either hand.
The punch stats don't contribute any clarity.
According to CompuBox punch statistics, Lomachenko landed 213 of 627 punches (34 percent) and Martirosyan and Linares connected on 207 of 739 (28 percent). The native of Ukraine also became the fastest in boxing history to win titles in three divisions by adding the WBA lightweight belt to his growing collection in just his 12th fight.
This win needs proper context.
The Ukrainian was stunned, too: though he beat the count easily, he spent the rest of the round on his bike as Linares contemplated the pursuit of greatness. "My fans always pack the arena every time I fight here". He made the most of his opportunity, overpowering Ali from the beginning of the fight.
However, Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, who promotes Lomachenko, praised both fighters at the post-fight news conference.
WBC lightweight champion Mikey Garcia is from the Golden State. But the next bout appears to already be in the works. Arum confirmed that Lomachenko shall return to action on the 25th of August in California, rumoured to be facing Ray Beltran in a unification affair.
