Troops join search for kidnapped Britons in Democratic Republic of Congo

Ebola Congo British tourists kidnap

Joel Wengamulay, spokesman for the Congolese Institute for The Conservation of Nature, advised the United Nations -backed Radio Okapi that the kidnapping occurred Friday within the Nyiragongo territory simply north of Goma.

A park ranger at Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was killed and at least three people, including two British tourists, were kidnapped Friday, park officials said.

It covers 3,000 square miles on the country's border with Uganda and Rwanda.

But it is located in DR Congo's North Kivu province, where armed groups are fighting for control of territorial and natural resources, and where poaching is a major threat.

One park ranger was killed during the incident in Africa's oldest national park and three other people, including the British citizens, were abducted.

Founded in 1925, it is home to about a quarter of the world's critically endangered mountain gorillas.

It was the deadliest attack in recent years and took the total number of rangers killed to 175.

The ICC also said that the identity of the attackers are not yet known.

Last year, a fifth of the park's southern sector was deforested owing to illegal charcoal production, the park said. Before taking the tourists, they murdered the park ranger, Rachel Katumwa, 25, who had accompanied them there.

The advice says tourists are vulnerable if travelling without escorted transport in the eastern part of the country, and the "risk of kidnap or injury as a result of armed or criminal activity remains high".

It added that British government staff are not always in the area and the British embassy's ability to offer consular assistance may be "severely limited".
