Brits set to enjoy hottest May Bank Holiday Monday on record

Revellers soak up the sun over the bank holiday weekend

Britain could be heading for the warmest May bank holiday on record, the Met Office has said.

Temperatures are predicted to reach as high as 29 degrees Celsius in some parts of England.

Another Met Office forecaster Mark Wilson told the Daily Star: "Monday is exceptionally likely to be the warmest early May Bank Holiday Monday since the holiday began 1978, beating the 23.6C record".

"Fortunately there's still a lot of sunshine in the forecast".

She said: "Monday will bring much of the same with widespread sunshine across a good part of the country and temperatures hitting 28C (82.4F) or possibly 29C (84.2F) in some parts".

"However, in north west Wales there is still a lot of cloud and sea fog, Aberdaron is low as 9.5C so not everyone in the United Kingdom is having a warm day".

The RAC predicts 1.91 million vehicle journeys on Monday will be made with traffic expected to peak between 10am to 4pm.

And students at Cambridge University made the most of the sunshine as they dressed up, stripped off and played drinking games.

"But I think we can expect things to be not as warm as they are now, but also not as dry as they are now", he said.

The average high for the May Bank Holiday in London is about 18C.

Exacta Weather's James Madden said there could even be a chance the mercury could reach the 30C mark.

Nearly all of the United Kingdom is basking in a heatwave that fell perfectly in line with the first May Bank Holiday, but temperatures in London and the south east are set to reach scorchio heights.

Bookmaker Coral has cut the odds on this month seeing the hottest May day ever recorded to 6-4 from 2-1.

Sunday saw highs of 26C in Heathrow, and Scotland and Northern Ireland had their hottest day of the year so far, with Edinburgh recording temperatures of 22.3C and Katesbridge 21C.
