Vikings re-sign Terence Newman, NFL's oldest on defense

Said Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman “We were able to be aggressive in free agency.”

Waynes signed a four-year, $12.9 million contract after being selected with the 11th pick in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Newman spent the past three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings following stints with the Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals. Even as Newman remained unsigned at the start of the Vikings' offseason workouts, both Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman continued to leave the door open for his return.

The Minnesota Vikings have announced that they have re-signed veteran cornerback Terence Newman, the team announced on Monday.

He started only 10 games in 2016 before making seven starts in 2017.

The Kenosha, Wisc. native has five career interceptions and logged a career-high 72 tackles in 2017 for the NFL's top-ranked defense.

Waynes had a takeaway in Minnesota's 2015 Wild-Card playoff game and has had crucial interceptions in wins over Green Bay at U.S. Bank Stadium in back-to-back seasons.

The oldest defensive player in the National Football League is going to be on the field for at least one more season.

Vikings players returned for team activities on April 16. The only other players older than Newman are all kickers or punters, including Adam Vinatieri (45), Phil Dawson (43), Matt Bryant (43 on May 29), Shane Lechler (42 on August 7) and Sebastian Janikowski (40). Newman, who turns 40 on September 4, signed a one-year deal with the Vikings, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
