Modi-Xi Summit: Devil is In The Implementation

This is why PM Narendra Modi is meeting Xi Jinping in Wuhan

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spent around 24 hours in the central Chinese city of Wuhan for meetings with President Xi Jinping, an ice-breaking trip both hoped would allow candour and nurture trust.

Beijing: India did not endorse China's controversial Belt and Road Initiative at the just concluded Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers' meeting while the rest of the eight-member bloc backed the pet project of President Xi Jinping. But the economic relationship is dwarfed by the US-China trade volume, which stood at nearly $600 billion.

China and India have agreed to strengthen communication between their militaries and keep the peace along their shared borders, signalling a successful reset in relations following a tense border stand-off past year. Modi outlined the five pillars or elements of India-China cooperation - "thought, communication, cooperation, dream and commitment" - and how these can become the strength of world peace, stability and prosperity. In 1962, China and India engaged in a bloody border war, and skirmishes have continued to break out sporadically in the decades since.

Briefing media here, Gokhale said, "The two leaders underscored the importance to maintain peace and tranquillity in the India-China border region".

India boycotted last year's Belt and Road Forum organised by China.

With 40 percent of the world's population, India and China have a responsibility to fix the world's many problems, Modi said, adding that the meeting was a "great opportunity" to do so.

Emphasising on strategic communication, Gokhale added, "The agreement (between India and China) of greatest strategic communication at the leadership level and at the government level allows for a free and frank discussion on all matters of interest".

In a tweet, Modi said discussions over tea had been productive and that "Strong India-China friendship is beneficial for the people of our nations and the entire world".

China and India are going to engage in a project in Afghanistan together, as per the sources.

An Indian official said off the record in Wuhan that the Afghanistan project, discussed in 2010 during a Beijing visit by then national security adviser Shiv Shankar Menon, had now got the go-ahead.

Wuhan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi offers to host the next informal summit with Xi Jinping in India next year, a proposal which elicited a positive response from the Chinese president. Also speaking in the backdrop of the worldwide economy, Mr Xi said cooperation between China and India would be a factor for peace and stability in the world.

The two leaders have endorsed the work done by the special representatives on the boundary question and the 20 other established mechanisms for addressing issues of contention and convergence. They agreed to jointly contribute in a positive and constructive way in facilitating sustainable solutions for global challenges including climate change, sustainable development, food security and so on.

Modi and Xi agreed their countries should strengthen existing diplomatic mechanisms and improve lines of communication between the two militaries to ensure peace and tranquility along the lengthy border, Gokhale said.
