Tiger Woods is returning from his post-Masters break at the Wells Fargo Championship next week. He's also now No. 12 in strokes gained overall on the entire PGA Tour.
Because of a back injury that required several surgeries, the 42-year-old Wood will make his first start in The Players since 2015 when he tied for 69th.
This will be his seventh start in the tournament at Quail Hollow, which hosted last year's PGA Championship won by Justin Thomas.
The 14-time major champion also announced via Twitter that he will play the Players Championship in two weeks, an event he's won twice, including in 2013. In six Charlotte starts, he has finished third (2004), 11th (2005), fourth (2009) and missed the cut in 2010 and 2012.
Even before Woods's reported commitment, the Wells Fargo field already had a strong field comprised of big names such as Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Jason Day and Phil Mickelson. These will likely be Woods' only appearances before he tees off at Shinnecock Hills in June for the U.S. Open.
