This is coming after Ms Sabina Idowu-Osehobo, the Executive Director of LAPO, disclosed on the 2018 World Malaria Day sensitisation programme in Lagos State that Nigeria losses about N132 billion to Malaria annually through treatment costs, prevention and loss of man hours.

Ghana is readying itself for the smooth pilot of the world's first malaria vaccine later in the year, officials said here on Wednesday.

The World Malaria Day was dedicated by the World Health Organisation and it serves as remembrance of progress and commitments to ensure global targets to eliminate the disease are met.

This year, the day coincides with an year-long series of activities to commemorate the 70th anniversary of WHO.

These states include Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and some north-eastern states like Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram. For those planning to travel to countries that have known malaria cases, it is very important to take preventive measures, including avoiding mosquito bites by using insect repellent, covering the arms and legs, and using a mosquito net.

Ambassador Elder informed the gathering that malaria can affect anybody, "but the presence of its parasite can be reduced if people sleep inside a treated net every night and also get treatment from qualified health providers within 24-hours should they diagnose the fever in a person".

In children, malaria can result in severe anemia and breathing difficulties, while adults are at risk of multi-organ failure, and both children and adults can die from the disease. During those 15 years, 6.2 million deaths were averted, including the deaths of 5.9 million children under five.

"The study assessed the presence of malaria parasites in blood bags".

"It is also gratifying that Algeria, Comoros, Madagascar, the Gambia, Senegal, and Zimbabwe have also been honoured this year by the African Leaders Malaria Alliance for leadership in scaling down malaria cases".

The aim of the World Health Assembly was to dramatically lower the global malaria burden.

The department plans to raise awareness of malaria prevention among people in the hot-spots, particularly high-risk groups like seasonal workers, farmers who stay in fields in the forest, forestry workers and forest managers in the time ahead. If safe and effective, the antibody potentially could be used among tourists, health care workers, and military personnel to prevent malaria infection for up to six months or be used in malaria elimination campaigns in conjunction with drug therapy.

"We believe that beating malaria means healthier societies, increased attendance at school and work, more productive communities, and stronger economies". Those include sleeping under a mosquito net, spraying your home and clothes with insecticide or insect repellant and wearing long sleeves and trousers between sunset and sunrise.
