Plane makes emergency landing after engine failure

The engine on a Southwest Airlines plane is inspected as it sits on the runway at the Philadelphia International Airport after it made an emergency landing in Philadelphia Tuesday

Southwest has about 700 planes, all of them 737s, including more than 500 737-700s like the one involved in Tuesday's emergency landing.

According to a statement from the Southwest, 143 people were on the flight.

US National Transport Safety Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt told a news briefing that one person had been killed, but declined to elaborate.

Seven other people were reportedly treated for minor injuries. "Safety is always our top priority at Southwest Airlines, and we are working diligently to support our customers and crews at this time", it said.

The FAA said that the plane landed after the crew reported damage to one of the plane's engines, along with the fuselage and at least one window. He said there was a fuel leak in one of the engines when firefighters arrived and a small fire was quickly brought under control.

In a recording of conversations between the cockpit and air traffic controllers, an unidentified crew member reported that there was a hole in the plane and "someone went out".

US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao praised the pilots, crew and passengers for helping to prevent a far worse tragedy.

An engine failure that forced Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 to make an emergency landing has left one person dead, making it the first fatality on a US airline in nine years. "Something is wrong with our plane!", he wrote.

Marty Martinez, a passenger on the plane, posted a Facebook Live during the emergency landing. A woman, sitting close to that window, was nearly taken out of the aeroplane and had to be taken back in.

Passengers shared photos of the shredded casing of one of the aircraft's engines.

"As the plane is going down, I am literally purchasing internet just so I can get some kind of communication to the outside world", he said.

Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said in Dallas that there were no problems with the plane or its engine when it was inspected Sunday.

The plane was flying from LaGuardia Airport in NY to Dallas.

A Dallas-bound Southwest plane was forced to make an emergency landing Tuesday in Philadelphia after an engine blew, killing one person according to KYW. As the passengers were being taken off the flight, Tranchin shot a few photos and was able to tweet a caption of relief, "If this ends up being the opening scene to Final Destination 13, I'm going to be really salty".

Although the airline hasn't officially confirmed what led to the emergency landing, aviation analyst Miles O'Brien told CNN that the images of the plane show signs of "uncontained engine failure".

The engine had 40,000 cycles on it, a quarter of those since it was overhauled, he said. "And this could be a very hazardous situation because essentially those are. pieces of shrapnel that come off at very high rates of speed and can easily pierce the skin of the aircraft".

The Southwest Airlines jetliner, a Boeing 737-700, was en route from LaGuardia Airport in NY to Dallas when it suffered an apparent in-flight engine failure of the left engine, National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt said during a briefing Tuesday.

Southwest is known for its strong safety record.
