Congress' most powerful lawmaker Speaker Paul Ryan said Wednesday, April 11, he would not stand for another term in his Wisconsin district this November.
Control of the House was already at risk in a tough midterm election.
Mr Ryan, who portrayed his decision as one driven by wanting to spend more time with his family, has had a rocky relationship with Republican President Donald Trump.
U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan said on Thursday he would like to see action this year on a rewrite of U.S. farm policy and legislation protecting young, undocumented immigrants from deportation, despite signs both are likely to stall.
To do so, they would have to pick up at least 23 seats in the 435-member House. "I took it reluctantly. I have no regrets whatsoever for having accepted this responsibility".
The 48-year-old father-of-three said he did not want to be known by his children as "only a weekend dad".
"There are a lot of candidates like Mia that we're recruiting all around the country", Ryan said, adding that even after he bows out in January, he will continue to work at fixing the party's diversity problem.
