Pence NSA Pick Withdraws After Trump Tried to Block Him

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence waves as he arrives at Jorge Chavez international airport in Lima Peru Friday

Lerner, who now works as a deputy for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, decided he did not want to dust up any drama, according to a source familiar with matter.

Jon Lerner was originally supposed to divide his time between counseling Pence on national security and working with U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, for whom he has been an adviser for years.

The president wondered aloud: 'Why would Mike do that?'

A Pence spokeswoman, Alyssa Farah, says Lerner informed Pence about Sunday his choice was approved by Pence and he was withdrawing.

'Vice President Pence holds Jon Lerner in the highest regard and expressed his deep gratitude for Jon's willingness to consider joining our team'.

On Sunday, Axios reported that President Donald Trump attempted to block Pence from hiring Lerner because of his "never Trump" views.

The vice president attended the Summit of the Americas after Trump earlier this week canceled plans to attend the event so he could craft a response to the chemical attack, for which USA officials say there's proof of Assad's involvement.

Lerner had backed Republican Senator Marco Rubio during the primary race to pick the party's candidate ahead of the 2016 presidential election. He also worked with all the Club for development, which aired ads of Trump.

Pence said that the Trump administration considered every potential response in developing its plan for the Syrian strike and its monitoring the environment for any retaliation.

Once Pence landed, he called Trump to reassure him about Lerner, which his team argued he has done good work for Haley.
