Shock as Blitzboks fail to medal, NZ take gold at Games

Australia and England complete Women's Sevens Commonwealth semi-final line-up

Both New Zealand sevens sides competing at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast have claimed gold medals in their respective tournaments.

The semifinal line-up on Sunday pits four of the five nations to have claimed Commonwealth Games medals across the five previous editions, with England facing four-time champions New Zealand in the first before the mouth-watering prospect of a South Africa versus Fiji encounter.

Scotland and Wales men lost their final pool matches, to South Africa and Fiji, and face each other in one of the games to decide 5th to 8th place on Sunday.

Both teams set up semi-finals against England, played earlier today, with the women winning 26-5 and the men 17-12, setting up Finals against Olympic champions Australia and Fiji.

The victor of that match will progress through to the semi-finals and the loser will be out of medal contention.

As it was 18-months ago, the two best Sevens sides in the world squared-off in the decider, with New Zealand scoring a long-range try in the first-half of extra-time for the win.

The Canadian women's rugby sevens team will be playing for a bronze medal after a 33-7 loss to Australia. The victor will face Australia in the final.

Under the pump throughout the first half, Australia conceded a penalty with less than a minute until halftime, with the Kiwis taking a quick tap and scoring on the left through Michaela Blyde. In a thrilling extra stanza, New Zealand secured the victory when Kelly Brazier scored a 80m try.

The home side couldn't capitalise, with Blyde putting a try-saving tackle on Emma Tonegato just metres short of the line.

The second half was barely 30 seconds old when Charlotte Caslick raced away to restore Australia's lead once more but it again didn't last long with Naoibasali scoring her second to tie the scores at 10-10.
