Afghan district governor among 15 killed after Taliban attack govt compound

District governor among 12 killed in militant attack in eastern Afghanistan

Taliban militants launched a pre-dawn raid on a district government compound in Afghanistan yesterday, killing at least seven people including the local governor, officials said.

Ramazan Ali Moseni, deputy chief police in Ghazni province, said seven killed were police officers and five were members of the country's intelligence agency known by the acronym NDS were also killed.

The district governor Ali Dost Shams was killed in the attack along with 15 security force members and civilians.

Rahmani said the Taliban planted mines to stop reinforcements from coming to help the government forces fend off the attack.

In a separate incident north of Kabul, a sticky bomb destroyed an oil tanker outside the Bagram military base, where US forces are stationed.

The Taliban claim to have taken control of key parts of the Khwaja Omari district, but provincial officials deny that.

There were no injuries at the base, which is heavily fortified.

Militant groups were responsible - through their attacks or fighting with security forces - for most of the civilian casualties, causing 1,500 deaths or injuries - 67 percent of the total and six percent more than past year.

Fighting went on for about three hours until fresh troops were deployed to the district and the Taliban escaped from the area.

"All parties to the conflict in Afghanistan must do everything in their power to protect civilians from harm", said Ingrid Hayden, the secretary-general's deputy special representative for Afghanistan.

Mohsini also said 25 Taliban fighters were killed in the gunbattle that started late on April 11 and lasted until morning.

Reacting to the development, the Taliban reportedly said that it has captured the district, a claim which was rejected by local law enforcers.
