Governor signs Equal Pay Day proclamation

Maternity leave varies widely across universities

In a February letter, Scott urged Speaker of the House Mitzi Johnson and Senate President Pro Tem Tim Ashe to pass one of two equal pay bills - S.275 or H.294 - so he could sign it before Town Meeting Day.

The sources asked for anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

"Women earn only 81 cents to a man's dollar in Hawai'i, and it's getting wider". "We need new policies to hold employers accountable for their rampant practice of tolerating gender pay gaps within their organizations, and for paying women less than men for comparable work".

One of the bills, sponsored by Democratic Senator Gayle Goldin, would provide protections against employer-imposed wage gaps based on factors like race, color, religion and sexual orientation. People who sue would be able to recoup three times as much as they were denied in compensation. Murphy has long said he planned to sign it.

Since January 1, today also marks how many more months a women would have to work to receive the same amount of pay as a man.

State Assemblywoman Valeri Vainieri Huttle, D-Bergen, said the pending law means "Equal Pay Day is especially significant to the women in New Jersey this year".

So basically, Equal Pay Day doesn't equally apply to everyone.

When it comes to wage disparity, women face unique obstacles, including a lack of paid family leave and subsidized child care, as well as discrimination in recruitment and hiring.

"I think with transparency in reporting wages and again just speaking up and talking about wages when you're working in a company, when you have men and women in the same positions, having the discussion basically", stated McFarland.
