India committed to help in development of Nepal: PM Modi

PM Modi holds talks with Nepal PM KP Oli to deepen bilateral ties

The two prime ministers agreed that the visit has imparted new dynamism to the multifaceted partnership between the two countries.

"No other countries in the world have the bonds of friendship and cooperation that exist between India and Nepal".

The Nepalese prime minister was speaking at an event organised by the India Foundation.

"Inter-dependence takes many forms between our countries". "Amity with all and enmity with none is our motto in foreign policy".

Earlier in the day, he also met President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

External affairs ministry officials highlighted the fact that Oli had chosen to make India his first destination after taking over as Prime Minister and said the importance attached to the visit by Nepal was evident from the delegation accompanying the Premier.

Oli earned considerable political capital as well as an anti-India image during his previous tenure as prime minister when he refused to relent to Indian pressure to amend Nepal's Constitution.

In 2016, Oli had accused India of breaking up a fragile coalition he was heading and forcing him to quit. And Nepal has been a close friend and partner of India. The two leaders are believed to have discussed an entire gamut of issues concerning their bilateral ties.

"This will link Nepal to the sea through the riverine network", Puri said. India has opposed the CPEC as it runs through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Oli was at odds with India when he previously served as prime minister, and tried to build ties with China. Commenting on the apprehensions expressed by India over Nepal's participation in OBOR, Oli told Indian news agency ANI, "I think we are neutral". The then Oli government had accused India of supporting the blockade brought by the Madhesi. Relations between neighbours are different than others. We have developed our friendship according to time with a objective to eradicate poverty, improve living standards. So, we want to take the opportunity to walk together with both of our neighbours. "Today, we reviewed the progress in various such connectivity projects", he said. He said adding that the two countries have agreed to expedite implementation of all connectivity projects.

The deal includes connecting Nepal and China by railway, roads, and power grids, apart from allowing Nepal access to Chinese seaports for trade with third countries.
