Remains of a woman found in a shallow grave in northern California likely belong to missing actress Adea Shabani, the LAPD announced Tuesday evening.
Last week, Shabani's alleged boyfriend, Christopher Spotz, shot and killed himself after leading police on a stolen vehicle chase. "Christopher Spotz was somehow involved in her death and we believe this to be a homicide", the LAPD said in a statement, "however, until the conclusion of the autopsy and our ability to examine the evidence related to the recovery of that evidence we won't be able to determine that definitively".
Adea Shabani was last seen the morning of February 23 near the 1700 block of Wilcox Avenue, just blocks from the famous TCL Chinese Theater in the middle of Hollywood, the Los Angeles Police Department said. "We can not say that conclusively at this point in time because the conditions of the remains prohibited positive identification", Hayes said at a news conference Tuesday at the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) headquarters.
Shabani, 25, was last seen in Hollywood on February 23.
Shabani and Spotz, 33, of Studio City, were involved in a romantic relationship, Hayes said.
Hayes said the investigators doubt whatever Spotz claimed about the disappearance. "There was nothing to support what he was saying, so that's what caused our interest in it".
Emma Joe, Shabani's friend, told KTLA that it was not like the aspiring actress to lose contact with her loved ones for this long, after Shabani's disappearance. As part of the investigation, detectives could not corroborate details of Spotz's account and continued to look into his story. The chase led him to Corona, Riverside County where he shot himself.
Hayes said detectives suspect that Shabani has been dead for more than a month.
Authorities have not yet released any information on a possible motive.
Bringolf did not give any details on the missing person case, but Fox40 in Sacramento, citing a "trusted source close to the investigation", reported that remains found at the site are possibly those of Adea Shabani.
