World TB Day observed across Kashmir

Report TB or face jail term

India bears the world's highest burden of TB, with approximately a quarter of all TB cases in the world. This is five years ahead of the 2030 deadline set by other countries.

The WHO has designated March 24 of each year as World TB Day to encourage global efforts to combat TB together.

She noted that young people are also key in ending the epidemic that is the most deadly infectious disease in the globe, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Over 95% of TB deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.

Seven countries account for 64% of the total, with India leading the count, followed by Indonesia, China, Philippines, Pakistan, Nigeria, and South Africa.

A few days back the Central government announced that it would take strict action, including jail term from six months to two years, against those pharmacists, chemists, doctors and private hospitals who fail to notify TB patients. As the former U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and the current U.N. Special Envoy on TB, I can attest to the fact that HIV/AIDS and TB are true partners in crime. "High rates of treatment failure and deaths are associated with fluoroquinolone resistance in the Indian cohort of MDR-TB patients", stated the report.

New Mexico Department of Health Cabinet Secretary Lynn Gallagher talks about the statewide decline in tuberculosis cases during a Thursday news conference at the Project ECHO offices at the University of New Mexico. Gifts and food were also distributed among the indoor patients of the hospital.

However, tuberculosis is curable and preventable. The bacterium becomes airborne and can spread when a person coughs or sneezes and another person inhales that air containing the contaminated droplets.

"We are already aligned with world TB treatment protocols. Having a center near their house will improve access and adherence to treatment", said Dr. Daksha Shah, who heads the TB treatment under RNTCP.

Earlier a cured patient spoke about his journey on TB and how he has been cured and is now healthy. According to the World Health Organization, more than 2 billion people globally are "latently" infected with TB, meaning they carry the bacteria but are now without symptoms, which would include cough, fever, weight loss and night sweats.

The Divisional seminar was organized at Government Dental College Auditorium Srinagar wherein Director Health Services, Kashmir Dr Saleem ur Rehman was the Chief Guest.

"We are already seeing a rise in the number of Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR) and Extremely Drug Resistant (XDR)-tuberculosis".

While the overwhelming popularity of mobile phone technology can rightly be seen as a sign of a people in touch with modern trends, tuberculosis continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Kenya.

"The need of the hour is newer treatment modalities that target the disease from an unconventional angle".

The social taboo attached to tuberculosis has resulted in people hiding their disease, something that has contributed in the significant increase in the spread of the disease.
