Pennsylvania School District Arms Students With Rocks to Fight School Shooters

Broken Bow School Board Met March 19th

Dr. David Helsel of the Blue Mountain School District, drew criticism after telling legislators in Harrisburg about his rocky strategy and says students received Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate (ALICE) active shooter training, reports WGNTV.

And if students can't leave the building, they'll have their stones. As a last defence each classroom has a 5-gallon bucket of river stones.

The plan was implemented late a year ago, prior to last month's shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, which rekindled the debate in the USA about how to protect students from school shootings. "They can chuck some rocks pretty fast".

The tactic has been criticised by security expert Kenneth Trump, president of security consulting firm National School Safety and Security Services, who called the idea illogical and irrational and said it could possibly cost lives. Students, too, have been trained how to barricade doors and participate in evacuation drills.

While some parents and students feel that this would help and support the school's decision, many said they find the whole idea of students throwing rocks at an armed person ludicrous.

While it's easy to see that a school official would do anything to make sure that children are safe, even going as far as coming up with such creative ideas, it's also not hard to see that so long as the schools are public and subject to government funding, the state is directly responsible for children's safety as well.

Susan Spicka, the executive director of an organization called Education Voters of Pennsylvania, attended the hearing. He tells Buzzfeed the plan is a "last resort" but cautions the media against mockery: "We have some people who have some pretty good arms".

"If you have a five-gallon bucket full of river stones, and we have 25 students and a teacher, it will serve as a deterrent."
"That's what I had a problem with. school districts in Pennsylvania are so under-funded, then they joke about kids having to defend themselves".

'While I don't like that we need to do this, this response is better than doing nothing'.
