Is Trump's New Transgender Troop Ban Already Dead on Arrival?

Trump issues order to ban most transgender troops from serving in military

The White House in a memo issued Friday night announced orders to ban most transgender people from serving in the U.S. military following president Donald Trump's controversial policy pledge that sparked outrage in 2017.

Under the new policy proposal, transgender Americans "who require or have undergone gender transition are disqualified from military service", while transgender troops now serving will essentially be asked to deny their own gender identity, as the Pentagon will be able to demand that they serve according to the gender they were assigned at birth.

For right now, service members who were diagnosed with gender dysphoria before the start of President Trump's policy are safe, said Blake Dremann, president of SPART*A, an advocacy groups for gay, lesbian and transgender troops.

"Today, the president rescinded his previous memorandum on transgender service in the military in order to allow Secretary Mattis to implement a new policy developed through extensive study by senior uniformed and civilian leaders, including combat veterans", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement this evening.

It added that the secretaries of defence and homeland security "may exercise their authority to implement any appropriate policies concerning military service by transgender individuals".

The policy adopts recommendations that Trump received last month from Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

"The Trump-Pence administration's continued insistence on targeting our military families for discrimination is appalling, reckless, and unpatriotic", said Ashley Broadway-Mack, president of the American Military Partner Association and spouse of an active duty Army officer.

No one with the strength & bravery to serve in the USA military should be turned away because of who they are.

Between 4,000 and 10,000 United States active-duty and reserve service members are believed to be transgender. It was expected that he would recommend Trump allow transgender troops to remain in the military. In the meantime, several top military officials and members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff tacitly criticized the ban, offering staunch defenses of the transgender men and women serving in uniform. David Eastburn, a Pentagon spokesman.

"After comprehensive study and analysis, the Secretary of Defense concluded that new policies should be adopted regarding individuals with gender dysphoria that are consistent with military effectiveness and lethality, budgetary constraints, and applicable law", the statement said, according to Fox News.

Two federal judges subsequently ruled against the transgender recruiting ban, and that prompted the Pentagon to allow transgender individuals to enlist starting on Jan.1, 2018. Since then, at least one transgender service member underwent sex reassignment surgery.

Jennifer Levi, a transgender right project director for GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders said in a statement, "This Trump-Pence plan categorically bans transgender people from service, with no legitimate basis".

Trump announced the ban in July to resolve a quietly brewing fight on Capitol Hill over whether taxpayer money should pay for gender transition and hormone therapy for transgender service members.
