Mark Hughes the favourite for Southampton job after Mauricio Pellegrino is sacked

Dramatic changes to Premier League relegation odds after Saturday matches

Southampton fired manager Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday in a bid to stop the team sliding out of the English Premier League.

During his 30-match tenure as Southampton manager, Pellegrino accumulated an overall record of 5 wins, 13 draws, and 12 losses; a record a bit weaker than his predecessor, Claude Puel (12 wins, 10 draws, and 16 losses).

Southampton have won only once in their last 17 EPL outings, though the team have qualified for the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Benfica are planning a run at former Watford head coach Silva should Rui Vitoria fail to win the Portuguese title.

With Palace and West Ham on bad runs of form they are right in amongst it as well, maybe the Hammers now having the look of a club who unexpectedly collapses at the end of a season.

Given that the Saints only have eight league games to go then club legend, and caretaker, Kelvin Davis could well be an option until the end of the season.

Hughes, 54, was sacked by Stoke in January, leaving the club in the relegation zone after four and a half years in the job.

"I feel so sorry to leave the club in this situation, but when you don't get results I understand the decision the club has to take", he said.

In a statement, Pellegrino said: "From the beginning I tried to do my best every single day".

Of this season's contrasting fortunes, Pellegrino said: "We have been living a hard season for many reasons".

The final straw for the Saints board was the spineless 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United on Saturday when Pellegrino accused some of his players of giving up.

As reported by The Scotsman, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers' achievements in his first two seasons in Glasgow have lead to some strong interest from Premier League club Southampton.
