Gun control: Florida lawmakers approve landmark bill

Hundreds of Cambridge Rindge and Latin students walk out to protest gun violence

The National Rifle Association filed a lawsuit in federal court Friday seeking to block a Florida law that had just been signed by Gov. Rick Scott, prohibiting gun sales to anyone under the age 21. It bans bump stocks, those devices that make semi-automatic weapons act like a machine gun.

As deputies began responding to last month's deadly Florida school shooting, the school's armed resource officer radioed that shots were coming from the freshman building, but he advised officers to stay back - a seeming failure to follow widely established guidelines to immediately confront the attacker in active shooter situations.

Hundreds of students at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School walked out of classes at 8:17 a.m. Wednesday to protest gun violence in schools and demand new gun control laws.

BUDGETS: Stalled during the gun debate, legislative spending plans found a tentative agreement between House and Senate leaders in the waning hours of Wednesday. Nineteen Republicans and 31 Democrats voted against it.

It's interesting to note that Governor Scott has an A-plus rating from the NRA, but he told reporters after he signed the bill that he actually never talked to the gun lobby about the bill. "Females between the ages of 18 and 21 pose a relatively slight risk of perpetrating a school shooting such as the one that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, or, for that matter, a violent crime of any kind".

Better to disarm the few who are risky with stricter gun laws than leave that massacre-potential simmering away for the sake of those who'd like to keep their guns. "Innocent people are dying because of the easy access to firearms in this country", said one student.

Those changes drew the ire of gun lobbyists, who argued the measures on firearm ownership would've done little to stop the Parkland shooting.

Attorney Alex Arreaza has said the Broward County Sheriff's Office, the school resource officer, the school district and the principal failed to protect students from Nikolas Cruz, who's accused of killing 17 people and wounding more than a dozen others February 14.

But not all educators were supportive of the students.

Democrat legislators described the guardian program as a "poison pill" in a law that otherwise takes necessary steps towards gun control.

Boldrick said she's taking the threats seriously but isn't letting them change her daily routine. And that's healthy in our democracy. Scott's office said he was reviewing the lawsuit.

In Tallahassee, the Florida House was expected to vote on gun legislation stemming from the school shooting.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott signs school safety bill into law.

According to CNN, Andrew Pollack, whose daughter Meadow died in the most recent shooting said the bill may not be flawless, but it's better than nothing.

Surrounded by family members of students killed in the shooting just over three weeks ago, the GOP governor said the bill balances "our individual rights with need for public safety".

The legal basis for firearm possession in the U.S. is enshrined in the Second Amendment of the Constitution. The new law strips law-abiding adults aged 18-20 of their Second Amendment right to self-protection and imposes unnecessary delays on all firearm purchases. The minimum age for handguns nationally is 21, but a person as young as 18 can buy a rifle in Florida.
