Nashville mayor to resign after pleading guilty to theft charge

She pushed for tremendous growth, helping shape an ever-changing skyline of construction cranes and new high-rises.

A contentious US$5.4 billion mass-transit project she has backed is up for voter approval in May.

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry is expected to announce her resignation Tuesday morning.

The affair began sometime in spring 2016, Barry said. She would not say when the affair ended, only saying that it's over. After the scandal, Barry claimed she would stay in office, but on Tuesday (March 6) she accepted her time in office has concluded.

In January, Barry, confessed that she had an extramarital affair with the head of her security detail, Sgt. Rob Forrest, for two years, CNN reported. But on Tuesday she reversed herself, agreeing to quit as part of a plea deal that included three years of probation and a fine. Those travel expenses may have reached about $30,000 in 2017, and Forrest received additional overtime pay during that period.

Last month, authorities charged in court documents that newly discovered nude cell phone photos may be evidence that Barry and Forrest were having an affair while he was being paid to be her bodyguard.

When Barry admitted to the affair in January, she stated, "I know that God will forgive me but Nashville doesn't have to".

Barry, born September 22, 1963, is an American businesswoman and politician who served as the 7th mayor of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, becoming the first woman to hold the post. Soon after, he learned he would shortly be mayor.

Briley won't be officially sworn in as mayor, but he will earn the office's $180,000 salary.

He called Barry "a friend" and said he hoped she would be able to move past "a frightful moment" in her life. He will be the eighth mayor of Nashville.

Barry had been facing several investigations since the affair came to light. She said at the time she hoped to become a voice in the national debate over opioid addiction.

"This is a very bad day". "There's no question I'm going to sign it", said Gov. Jim Justice (R). "I love you, Nashville".

Barry had maintained a high profile in the city, appearing routinely at concerts and other events and spearheading a successful effort to bring professional soccer to Nashville. After 31 years with the police department, 14 of those years as supervisor of mayoral security, Forrest resigned that same day.

Forrest, 58, was also married, but his wife dumped him and filed for divorce after learning of the adulterous romance.
