Tripura: IPFT demands separate state for tribals

Narendra Modi

State BJP chief Mahendra Nath Pandey also attributed the party's performance to the Prime Minister and Shah.

Outgoing Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar submitted his resignation to governor Tathagata Roy today, a day after the CPI (M)-led Left Front was dethroned by the BJP-IPFT coalition after almost 25 years in power.

Further, while answering a question on Indigenous People's Front of Tripura's (IPFT) demand of a separate state for the tribals, Deb said Prime Minister Modi and BJP party chief will take a decision on this.

The IPFT would also seek a separate block for its MLAs in the Assembly if it was not given "respectable" positions in the cabinet, he said.

The first ever BJP-IPFT combined government in Tripura is likely to take oath of office and secrecy on March 8 next in a mega function at the largest open stadium of the city in presence of top leaders of the country.

Ram Pada Jamatia, another candidate of BJP from 30-Bagma (ST) constituency said, " The people of Tripura got independence after long time from CPI-M regime, which is victory of people."Mr. Jamatia won as BJP candidate from Gomati District under Udaipur subdivision with good margin that counted 24074 votes and nearest candidate Naresh Ch. Jamatia from CPIM party had secured 21241 votes. "I will not run away from taking any responsibility", he told reporters here when asked if he would accept the task of chief ministership. "However, with the support of people and the employees, I am sure everybody will learn on the job and do a great job in due course", he said.

The BJP leadership did not make any comment on the IPFTs demand.

The IPFT struck an alliance with the BJP before the elections on the basis of a common minimum agenda, which included formation of a high-power committee with representations from the central and state governments and the indigenous community to address the problems of the tribals.

The tribal council area comprises two-third of the state's territory and the tribals form one-third of the population.
