It was announced yesterday that the 31-year-old, an Italian worldwide defender who was the captain of Fiorentina, had passed away after a "sudden illness".

The defender's body was discovered in his hotel room when he failed to join players for breakfast at their hotel just before their match in Udine, in northeast Italy.

Fiorentina's game was called off in the morning.

Italian prosecutors have revealed they have opened an investigation into the possibility Davide Astori's sudden death was linked to manslaughter.

"He was a fantastic guy - a great player but especially a fantastic guy".

CLAUDIO RANIERI mourned the death of countryman Davide Astori during yesterday's 1-1 draw with Marseille.

"It is odd that such a thing should happen to a professional who is so closely monitored without there being any warning signs".

Federation Internationale de Football Association and UEFA paid tribute to "a great player and great man" while Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Bayern Munich were among the foreign clubs to send their condolences to Astori's family.

Fiorentina President Andre Della Valle told reporters that Astori had been due to sign a new contract with the club on Monday that would have kept him in Florence for the rest of his playing career.

All of Sunday's Serie A and Serie B matches were postponed as a sign of mourning. "He was only 31 and it's very hard to explain this situation". He played 14 times for Italy.

All matches in Italy's top league were cancelled.

This included loan spells at Roma and Fiorentina before his permanent move.

Italy visit Wembley later this month for a friendly with England and the Football Association has said it will honour Astori, saying it was "truly saddened" by the news.

Matteo Renzi, a former mayor of Florence and now leader of the Democrat Party in Sunday's Italian election, tweeted: "This seems to me impossible".

"You were the best expression of an old-fashioned world, one that people have left behind, with values like altruism, elegance, politeness and respect towards others".

"Congratulations indeed, you were one of the best sports figures I came across".
