Dick's to end sales of assault-style rifles after Parkland

A Dick's Sporting Goods store is seen in Arlington Heights Ill. Wednesday Feb. 28 2018. Dick's Sporting Goods announced Wednesday that it will immediately end sales of assault-style rifles and high capacity magazines at all of its stores and ban the

In the aftermath of the 14 February shooting, pressure has mounted on USA politicians to act on gun control and for corporations to cut ties with the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA). As the #BoycottNRA flooded social media last week, more than a dozen companies severed ties with the National Rifle Association. "They may be correct - but if common sense reform is enacted and even one life is saved, it will have been worth it", Chairman and CEO Edward W. Stack said in a statement.

"But thoughts and prayers are not enough", he said in an open letter.

He added, "We're going to take a stand and step up and tell people our view and, hopefully, bring people along into the conversation".

L.L. Bean, the ME retailer most famous for selling its beloved bean boots, announced Friday that it is adding its name to the roster of companies raising the minimum age for firearm purchases to 21 years of age.

A company statement put out Wednesday morning said assault-style rifles would be removed from all 35 Field & Stream locations.

This time, Stack said, the changes will be permanent.

Stack also revealed that Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old arrested in the Florida attack, had bought a shotgun at a Dick's store within the past four months. It will also monitor third-party sellers on its marketplace over the issue, the company said in a message posted on its website.

"We're just not doing any interviews at all", he said.

We will no longer sell high capacity magazines. "Mothers make the majority of spending decisions for their families, and we want to shop with businesses that care about the safety of our families - making this a smart business move, too".

On the final day of February - two weeks after the Parkland shooting - DICK'S Sporting Goods joined the list of companies changing their sales practices.

Walmart said it will be "removing items from our website resembling assault-style rifles, including non-lethal airsoft guns and toys". "We don't want to be a part of a mass shooting", he said.

"We at Dick's Sporting Goods are deeply disturbed and saddened by the tragic events in Parkland. The best thing to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun". While I support this decision, it is easy to interpret this action as age discrimination because a 20-year old has a legal right to purchase a firearm in this country.

She said that she hopes other businesses, as well as elected officials, follow the lead set by Dick's. The pro-gun customer noted that Texas is the largest state in the US that allows licensed gun owners to carry a holstered pistol in public. Others are changing the minimum purchase age of firearms as Congress continues to drag its feet on legislation.

Authorities said the accused Parkland gunman bought a firearm at Dick's past year - but it was not used in the shooting.
