Kaprizov power-play goal gives Russians hockey gold

Continuity carries Germany, Russians into David versus Goliath final

It started when Yannic Seidenberg made a decision to dump the puck in, relinquishing possession to the Olympics Athletes from Russian Federation.

OAR's victory marks the first time in more than two decades that a men's Olympic team featuring Russian players has captured gold, with Russian players previously helping the Unified Team finish atop the podium at the 1992 Albertville Olympics.

Later, at the medal ceremony, the winning team sang the Russian anthem over the sound of the Olympic anthem at the hockey arena, despite being barred by Olympic authorities from having their flag raised or anthem played.

The victory brought plenty of joy to the Russian athletes despite the lack of National Hockey League players participating in this tournament and their inability to officially compete for their home country due to sanctions following a major doping scandal. Constantly saying it doesn't matter that they had to wear nondescript red and white uniforms that lacked the Russian Coat of Arms, players gave the Russians their second gold and 17th total medal of the Olympics.

Russian Federation and Germany fought back and forth until Russian Federation scored a point in the third period and then in a few seconds, Germany fired back with a goal, tying the game back up.

Gusev netted a steep-angle shot with 6:39 remaining in regulation time for a 2-1 lead, only for Germany's Dominik Kahun to equalise 10 seconds later.

"It was the craziest game ever", Ilya Kovalchuk said.

Still, Germany's run to its first gold-medal game won't soon be forgotten.

The South Korean team's silver earned the hosts their first Olympic curling medal, although they were unable to replicate the kind of form that had seen them win eight matches in a row.

"When I started playing it was my dream and goal to win the Olympic gold medal for the nation", Kovalchuk said.

Gusev also had two goals and two assists.

Incredibly, though, the penalty kill came through for OAR when a scrambled play in front of the German goal resulted in Gusev chopping a loose puck over aus den Birken's shoulder to knot the game at three inside the final minute, sending the gold-medal game to overtime.

Friedrich's gold follows his victory in the two-man event, making him only the second man to win in both disciplines in the past 30 years.

"It's a little tough right now because we all felt we could have won that game, but that's hockey", he said. Corporate and political and regimented though it may be, that's what makes it still the best game in town for an athletic thrill every other year - and yes, sometimes a political one, too.
