How the Blake Bortles extension affects the Vikings' quarterback situation

Jaguars finalizing 3-year contract extension with Blake Bortles

This has been a highly anticipated class, and nearly every name that was expected as a possibility (from franchise tag candidate Kirk Cousins to redshirt sophomore Sam Darnold) is available in one offseason.

The contract has been reported as being worth $54 million, including $26.5 million in guaranteed money.

It's also important to remember that Bortles is still just 25 years old, that he's coming off a very solid season and played his best during his first National Football League postseason experience. On Saturday night they signed Blake Bortles to a contract extension.

Even with the extension though, it shouldn't change the Jaguars plans. He was due to make $19.053 million in 2018 after the team picked up his fifth-year option last May, but will now remain with the club through the 2020 campaign.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are out of the quarterback market. But for now, Blake Bortles appears to be their man.

Rarely does a player get to play his high school, collegiate and professional career in their home state as Bortles has, but he's clearly thankful for the opportunity.

Bortles has played - and started - every game the past three seasons, most recently throwing for 3,687 yards with 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions this past season.

Bortles had a rough start to the 2017 season - he had a five-interception practice in training camp and coach Doug Marrone opened up the quarterback competition during the preseason - but he rebounded and put together the best year of his career.

"Signing this second deal with the team that drafted me was my goal from the beginning. So that'll take place for the next two weeks, and ideally I'll be cleared and back to just my normal throwing program four days a week trying to get everything tuned up and ready to go for OTAs". Which would have paid him so much that it would have made no sense to also draft a potential franchise quarterback? "Blake has proven, with toughness and dependability, that he can be the leader this team needs going forward".

Bortles said he never came close to missing a game, but the cortisone injections became less effective as the season progressed.
