Lovemark, List lead Honda Classic, Woods 4 back

The Punter's In-Play Blog: It's tight at the top at the Honda

Luke List and Jamie Lovemark took a one-stroke lead at the Honda Classic in Florida on a windy Friday as Tiger Woods fought back from late trouble to sit four back after a one-over par 71. They were among only 10 players remaining under par.

Rory McIlroy shot a second consecutive 72 but defending champion Rickie Fowler failed to make the projected cut after a 76 for a 147 total. The only two-time victor on Tour this season shot an 8-over 78 to miss the cut at 12-over.

List was in the first group of the day to tee off at 6:45 on the 10th hole. His ball on No. 9, his final hole, was in a bunker level with his waste. But the key is to keep hitting balls onto the greens and give myself looks at it.

He was at 4-over 144, and happy to be sticking around. He won the 2012 Honda Classic and lost a playoff to Russell Henley two years later, but hasn't made the cut here since.

"We have to have respect for the player that at the end of the day is paramount", says Kennerly.

"I thought the wind would move it 15 yards and it moved 25-plus, and there's a double-bogey", Fowler said.

Former British Open victor Louis Oosthuizen and reigning PGA Championship holder Justin Thomas were a stroke off the lead on 67, while defending champion Rickie Fowler (71) and four-time Major victor Rory McIlroy (72) were plagued by three bogeys and a double-bogey respectively.

"I feel like I'm right there, " Woods said after finishing at 141, 1 over par and in a tie for 14th.

Woods was closer to the lead than the cut line when he teed off in the afternoon. Given the toughness of the course, especially in Friday's conditions, it was one of the most impressive rounds of the PGA Tour season so far. He missed the cut last week at Riviera.

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy survived the cut but is back at four over after shooting a second straight 72.

It landed 12 feet below the hole for a birdie putt.

Danny Lee of New Zealand plays his shot from the 17th tee during the first round of the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Lexi Thompson of the US, the 2016 champion, is fourth and another shot behind Lee.

Lovemark followed an opening-round 68 with a 69 on Friday to climb into a tie with List at 3-under for the tournament.

Noren and Simpson both carded four-under par 66 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where only 20 players broke par.

"It's kind of irrelevant because there's going to be 30 guys within a couple shots of the lead", List said.

Otaegui, from Spain, has one title on the European Tour, past year at the Paul Lawrie Match Play Championship.
