National Football League free agency: Dolphins place franchise tag on Jarvis Landry

Miami Dolphins

Landry has been one of the most productive players in the NFL during his four-year career, routinely ranking amongst the league's elite in receptions.

The Bears may now have to hope the Jacksonville Jaguars don't franchise tag Allen Robinson, or else they'll be stuck pursuing second-tier receivers like Albert Wilson, Paul Richardson or Marquise Lee.

The free agent market for wide receivers got smaller on Tuesday.

The Miami Dolphins are a better team without wide receiver Jarvis Landry than without him, which is why I understand Miami's decision to hit Landry with the franchise tag in order to ensure he doesn't leave via free agency. For the other 31 teams in the National Football League, however, the franchise tag can test how committed they are to adding said player to their roster.

The Dolphins later confirmed the report.

The LSU product has been an integral part of the Dolphins' offense in his four seasons in Miami, and the Dolphins likely would like to work out a long-term deal with him but didn't want to compete with other suitors this offseason.

Landry will inevitably intrigue general managers, as he's a productive possession receiver in the prime of his career.

If the two sides can not agree to terms on a long-term deal by mid-July, Landry will play the 2018 season on a one-year deal worth about $16 million.

First Landry would have to fall in love with a team and know that club would offer him a long-term contract.

In 2017, Landry produced career-highs in receptions (112) and receiving touchdowns (9), and tied a career-high in first downs (60).

Landry can now continue in that role in 2018 following this move.
