Almost 1,000 people dragged two suspects out of a police station and beat them to death in anger after the rape and killing of a five-year-old girl in India's remote north-east, police said.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu termed the rape and murder of the minor girl as "barbaric and inhuman" and termed Monday's incident of the mob lynching the two accused as "unfortunate". A mob of almost 1,000 people attacked the police lockup and took away the two accused.
'The mob damaged the station and took away the accused before beating them to death with clubs, hammers and stones, ' Lohit police chief Issac Pertin told AFP. The girl's body and severed head were found at a tea garden in Namgo village, where she was reported missing.
The crowd then stripped the men, dragged them through the streets and beat them to death, the police said.
Following the arrests of the suspects, the group reportedly demanded the men be handed over by police before dragging them from the police lock-up and attacking them on Monday.
Apur Bitin, an officer in the Arunachal Pradesh town of Tezu, said more than 15 members of the force were injured by the angry group, which heavily outnumbered police. Though a case of murder has been registered, no arrest has been made till now.
The killing of rape accused by the mob is second such incident in the Northeast in last three years. "Our rules and regulations do not allow us to take the law into our hands", Khandu said.
However, it seems that the court's decision to keep the duo in police custody did not go down well with the public.
Three policemen including the in-charge of the Tezu station and a woman sub-inspector were suspended and the SP was transferred for their "inefficiency" in dealing with the matter, an official release said.
